Welcome

network imageThis is a development site for exploring Open Source Web 2.0 applications for developing personal learning  and research environments (PLEs and PREs).  The web site is constructed and managed using Wordpress as a combined content management system and a blogging tool. A number of projects will be developed and hosted here. Currently there are projects using Wordpress (a blogging and web content management system), Elgg (a blogging and social networking system) and phpBB (a discussion board system),  Mediawiki (the wiki platform used by Wikipedia), and  Moodle (a virtual learning environment). In addition some of the projects make use of freely available hosted services such as Wetpaint,  PBworks,  Ning and Google applications such as Google Docs and Google Sites.

The rationale behind all the projects is that it is now a realistic option to construct on-line personal learning and research environments and networks entirely by using free web 2.0 platforms and applications, open source software and open content and resources of various kinds. This is possible for individuals, groups, public sector organisations, institutions and companies. This can include public presence and publication and private spaces for discussion and collaborative work. However, there are important issues about the ownership of materials, security and privacy not to mention the reliability and sustainability of the service used. Policies and procedures have to make due allowance for these issues.
