It was reported in the UK Independent yesterday, 23rd Feb 2006, that, despite record numbers of graduates hitting the labour market, employers are expecting difficulties recruiting due to a number of shortcomings. This is based on a survey conducted by the Association of Graduate Recruiters. In particular graduates do not have enough experience of giving presentations in tutorials and working in teams. Graduates do not, it is said, have the communication skills they need in the workplace. There are also serious issues with poor spelling and grammar, poor arithmetical skills, all leading to illiterate writing and the need for constant supervision.
Employers are [....] looking for graduates who can demonstrate softer skills such as team-working, cultural awareness, leadership and communication skills, as well as academic leadership.
