On the 16th March I am giving a short presentation at the World University Network e-learning seminar Researching the immediate world. The topic of my paper is blogs and wikis and their use in educational contexts. I will be illustrating the presentation with a few examples and conclude with some observations on what are the research issues that arise. I must confess to being a little nervous about this. I am quite used to giving presentations on subjects and issues connected to my teaching and related research but this is a new departure for me in an area I am quite new to. On the other hand, I guess it will be new for many of the audience too! The presentation will be quite brief, 20 minutes, and introductory.
If anyone has favourite examples of blogs and wikis in action (including their own activity) I would be interested (and grateful) to hear about them.
I would also be interested to hear views on what the research issues are. I am particularly interested in how the use of blogs and wikis could meet a variety of important agendas - developing IT skills, information literacy skills, life-long learning, the ‘production’ of independent proactive reflective learners with the meta-cognitive skills required, leading into issues of critical citizenship and personal effectiveness. Research would be into the effectiveness of the educational uses of blogs and wikis to support and advance these agendas.
Needless to say, Elgg will feature in as one of the examples!
